Traditional Calligraphy & Illumination Traditional pieces generally reflect styles popular during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. These are what most people picture when they hear the words "illuminated manuscript." Often, I have adapted specific styles from a specific time period to the desired design. Occasionally, I employ a bit of a mash-mash when a mash-mash is called for. As for my materials, I use a mixture of traditional and modern materials and techniques to make my pieces. The paints are all modern, but the inks and gilding materials can be either modern or made from centuries' old recipes, depending on the effects I want to achieve and the desires of the client. Note that single and double (even triple) illuminated letters can be easily ordered through my Etsy shop. Chancery or Italic Chancery (Italic) was developed for the Roman chancery (think papal bureaucrats) during the early Renaissance as a response to the excesses of Gothic hands that made actually reading the texts a challenge. Chancery was also designed to be faster to write. This widely used version is more specifically called English Roundhand, but commonly referred to as Copperplate. Rotunda--so-called because of the roundness of its letters--is the most easy to read. It was used primarily in Italy and Spain and its colonies and endured into the 18th Century. It is also often associated with music manuscripts. The hand is characterized by frequent changes in the thickness of the letter parts. It shows best at larger sizes, so I wouldn't recommend it for enveloped ... unless it's a very large envelope. It became the most commonly used hand of early Western (think Latin) books and manuscripts beginning in the 3rd Century and persisted in use for several hundred years. Uncials continued to be used for titles and such in other style texts for hundreds of years more. This is a 'majuscule' hand, meaning that there are very few parts of the letters that ascend above or descend below the X-height. It has no 'lowercase.' It is written with a pointed pen and is usually done with the lines quite close together so that the ascenders and descenders 'weave' together, although I often space it more to make it more readable. This is a 'minuscule' hand. There is no widely used 'uppercase,' but I have adapted the letters when needed. Eventos Especiales Sobres Envelope addressing can be done in a variety of styles, from the very traditional (Copperplate) to the very modern (Weaver), but I do recommend something that is easy to read so that there is less chance of mis-delivery. You can choose to have only the address of the invitee done or, additionally, the return address on the back. And, yes, the addresses in the examples are fake. I never put anyone's real information on the internet. Seating Cards and Table Numbers Like with envelopes, seating cards and table numbers can be done in any number of styles and colors -- folded, not folded, corner decorations, plain, different sizes....

Celebrating the 140th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge You might think this simple, short quote took very little time to make, but you'd be wrong. This took a day. Why so long? First, I wrote it out twice to get a feel for its rhythm, to see how much space I would need, and to decide on a lay-out. I opted to keep everything clean and elegant. The final draft took several hours. I wrote very slowly to get the desired effect. Also, the paper I used, while lovely, is difficult to work with. It is "fiber-y," meaning the fibers dislodge easily and get stuck in the nib. It also has some texture, which means the pen does not easily glide over its surface.
